Positioning for growth throughout Southeast Florida, City Furniture today opened a 93,680-square-foot “destination” furniture superstore in Boca Raton that features both City Furniture and Ashley Furniture HomeStore showrooms. Innovative and “green” from its rooftop solar tubes for daylight harvesting to its LED lighting inside and out, the iconic structure at 3350 Airport Road is South Florida’s first full-line furniture store pursuing Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) certification from the U.S. Green Building Council.
“This opening is truly about sustainability – both economic and environmental,” said City Furniture President Keith Koenig. “Our company’s roots are in South Florida, and we’re deeply committed to grow with and help sustain this region. We’re pleased to have generated more than 200 construction jobs and to be adding about 50 new retail jobs as we launch the store’s operations.” Overall, the Broward County-based company employs more than 800. City Furniture’s ground lease with the Boca Raton Airport Authority will also help support local economic growth, with rent going to enhance airport operations.

Travel in the world’s cleanest country
The country that is cleanest in the world is Switzerland. It tops the list with an overall EPI score of 95.5 out of 100, while European countries account for 14 of the top 20 environmental performers. Europe has the infrastructure to provide clean drinking water and treat waste water, lowering the likelihood that Europeans will suffer from waterborne disease. Europe scores consistently well in EPI’s environmental health ranking, which measures the effects of pollution on human health.Related articles

Miami City Guide - The Art Deco South Beach
Art Deco came about in the 1920’s almost as a reaction to the First World War and the austerity people had lived with for so long. It took a while, but in the 1930’s this movement reached Miami’s south beach and influenced the buildings that were being built here at the time. What was produced was a neighbourhood that stands today as a proud memory to the architectural revolution of the art deco movement.Read Full Article

If you're one of the hundreds of thousands of taxpayers who wait until the last minute to file your taxes, make a note: The IRS recently announced that the due date for 2010 individual federal income tax returns will be Monday, April 18, 2011.
Traditionally, Tax Day falls on April 15 unless that day happens to be on a Saturday, Sunday or federal holiday. In 2011, April 15 meets none of those criteria -- it falls on a Friday, and there's no federal holiday that day.
So what's the deal?
In 2011, Washington, D.C., will celebrate Emancipation Day on April 15, a day earlier than normal, since April 16 falls on a Saturday. Emancipation Day marks the anniversary of the day that President Lincoln signed the Compensated Emancipation Act. The Act, which was "for the release of certain persons held to service or labor in the District of Columbia," freed 3,100 slaves in the District, making DC residents the "first freed" by the federal government. In 2005, Emancipation Day was made an official public holiday in the District of Columbia.

Fort Lauderdale has been reimbursed for preparations it took last summer in case the oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico affected South Florida.
City Commissioner Bruce Roberts said BP has paid the city $70,000. The company had promised to cover costs of government responses to its spill.
In the wake of the spill, then-City Manager George Gretsas signed an emergency deal with the engineering firm PBS&J to develop a crisis plan and begin sampling and testing water and sediment along the city's beaches and waterways. Gretsas said the work would establish a baseline to determine any damage that results if the oil spill comes here.
The oil spill, though, never reached the currents that would have pulled it toward the southeastern coast of Florida.

More than 100,000 homes were in some stage of foreclosure in Broward and Palm Beach counties last year, part of a record 2.9 million foreclosures nationwide, according to RealtyTrac, an Irvine, Calif.-based foreclosure listing firm.
“We’re working our way through a huge backlog, and there’s no reason to think 2011 will be much different than 2010 or 2009,” said Guy Cecala, publisher of Inside Mortgage Finance, an industry newsletter. “I think we’re looking at 2012 before we see any significant improvement.”
But Roy Oppenheim, a Weston defense attorney, insists foreclosures will decline sharply this year.
He said lawyers for lenders already are more careful about filing cases, mindful of sanctions being handed down by judges angry about improper procedures in some cases that led to foreclosure moratoriums this fall.
“Bank counsel is very reluctant to proceed with foreclosures unless the I’s are dotted and the T’s are crossed,” Oppenheim said. “Banks will not find lawyers to do what was done last year and in years past.”

On the eve of his murder, Martin Luther King Jr.'s Dream was turning dark. Worried about poverty and Vietnam, he was growing more radical--and that, his family says, is why he was killed. Was the real King a saint, a subversive--or both?
The sun was about to set. On Thursday, April 4, 1968, Martin Luther King Jr. had retreated to room 306 of the Lorraine Motel, worrying about a sanitation strike in Memphis and working on his sermon for Sunday, Its Title: "Why America May Go to Hell." For King, whose focus had shifted from civil rights to antiwar agitation and populist economics, the Dream was turning dark. He had been depressed, sleeping little and suffering from migraines.
In Washington, his plans for a massive Poor People's Campaign were in disarray. In Memphis, King's first march with striking garbage men had degenerated into riot when young black radicals--not, as in the glory days, angry state troopers--broke King's nonviolent ranks. By 5 p.m. he was hungry and looked forward to a soul-food supper. Always fastidious-a prince of the church--King shaved, splashed on cologne and stepped onto the balcony. He paused; a .30-06 rifle shot slammed King back against the wall, his arms stretched out to his sides as if he were being crucified.
The Passion was complete.
As he lay dying, the popular beatification was already underway: Martin Luther King Jr., general and martyr to the greatest moral crusade on the nation's racial battlefield. For most Americans the story seems so straightforward. He was a prophet, our own Gandhi, who led the nation out of the darkness of Jim Crow. His Promised Land was the one he conjured on the steps of the Lincoln Memorial in 1963, a place where his "four little children... will not be judged by the color of their skin but by the content of their character."
Now, 30 years after his assassination, that legend is under fresh assault--from King's own family and many of his aging lieutenants. His widow, Coretta, and his heirs are on the front lines of a quiet but pitched battle over the manner of his death and the meaning of his life. They believe James Earl Ray, King's convicted assassin, is innocent and that history has forgotten the real Martin Luther King.
To his family, King was murdered because he was no longer the King of the March on Washington, simply asking for the whites only signs to come down. He had grown radical: the King of 1968 was trying to build an interracial coalition to end the war in Vietnam and force major economic reforms--starting with guaranteed annual incomes for all. They charge that the government, probably with Lyndon Johnson's knowledge, feared King might topple the "power structure" and had him assassinated. "The economic movement was why he was killed, frankly," Martin Luther King III told NEWSWEEK. "That was frightening to the powers that be." They allege there were political reasons, too. "RFK was considering him as a vice presidential candidate," says Dexter, King's third child. "It's not widely known or discussed, [but] obviously those watching him knew of it. They [Kennedy and King] were both considered powerful and influential in terms of bringing together a multiracial coalition."

Basic Ingredients
Quick, tasty meals need not be at the expense of healthy and low cost options. Basic ingredients for your pantry such as rice, pasta, couscous, flavoured tomatoes, fish, canned beans, canned soups can form the basis for a hearty meal, or be added to a soup or as a base for a pasta dish.
Frozen vegetables in the freezer can quickly add serves of vegetables to your meals. Some salad greens in the fridge will complete a simple meal of steak and salad with a minimum of effort.
Time-savers
- Make a bigger batch of a dish if your food budget will allow it. This will mean you can heat up leftovers the next night, or put it away in the freezer for another night. Alternatively, have it for lunch the next day.
- Cook extra rice and freeze leftovers. Pull it out and throw some frozen vegetables, egg and meat if wanted, for easy fried rice.
- Make a big pot of mashed potato, and use the leftover to top a cottage pie. If you have the oven on to cook something, quickly chop some potatoes, kumara, pumpkin, and bake them. These vegetables can be reheated on their own or used as the basis for another meal such as roast vegetable lasagna, or a roast vegetable soup.
- Consider buying healthy convenience foods - quick cook rice, or fresh pasta cooks in less than 10 minutes. Look for them on special, there are many Weight Watchers and low fat options available to keep your kilijoules low, even on instant meals.
- Invest in kitchen appliances such as a slow cooker and use it to make casseroles, soups, cooked whole chicken, baked potatoes, risotto, or a health grill to quickly cook meat while removing the fat.
- Make meals in advance at the weekend and freeze part or whole meals to take out during the week.
- Cook savory muffins or scones, which can make a meal with a bowl of soup.
- Look for recipes where you can use a basic recipe and adapt it to make different meals. For example, create a meat and tomato sauce which can be used for spaghetti bolognaise, nachos with some beans and lasagna or cottage pie. This sauce can be frozen and used when needed.
Make your own takeaways and get your children involved
This will save you money and doesn’t take that much work. Think of the time it would take you to drive, order and pick up your takeaways. It's enough time to put some crumbed fish pieces, fish fingers, chicken nuggets, or burgers on to cook, with some home made fries (these cook quicker if cut smaller and/or cooked for 5-10 minutes in the microwave), or frozen chips. Plus once again, it's a healthier version of a commercially made treat meal.
Buy ready-made tubs of falafel, make patties, add tomatoes, beetroot, lettuce and put in a burger bun.
Make pizzas with bought bases or use a bread maker for easy and tasty pizza dough.Let the kids create their own flavorings.
Cook smart!
Consider investing in a good recipe book or two which have quick, easy recipes which can become your weeknight lifesavers. This will also mean you can plan your meals and your grocery shopping. Once you have a few tried and true recipes up your sleeve you can avoid culinary chaos.
